Can an African tech innovation help end violence against girls?
That’s the hope of Stacy Owino, whose "iCut"-branded app uses a mobile phone platform to discretely connect girls facing female genital mutilation (FGM) with people who can help.
The practice of FGM is illegal in Kenya, where 21-year old Stacy lives, but she says that the practice is rooted in outmoded mindsets and persists in Kenya as well as many other parts of the world. Stacy and her team hope Kenyan girls can use the app to learn more about FGM and connect quickly and quietly with relevant authorities if they fear they are being targeted for this crime.
“It’s important for us as young women to get into these spaces because these are the spaces that will determine the algorithms that will determine our lives in the coming future." – Stacy told us.
